Sanfangqixian Southern Entry Corridor

Location:Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China
Services: From Landscape Concept to Construction Document Service (ongoing)

In 2015 iPlace Design provided landscape design services to the city of Fuzhou, Fujian, China, for their San Fang Qi Xiang historic cultural district. The San Fang Qi Xiang district, called “Three Streets and Seven Alleys” is a renovated, 40 Hectare neighborhood, laid out 1500 years ago in the Tang Dynasty, and now comprised of sixteenth century Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings, streets and canals, in the heart of Fuzhou city. It is the best preserved collection of Ming and Qing period buildings in China. Buildings include homes of past rich and famous, as well as public buildings originally used for crafts and manufacturing. A public street, Nanhou Street, provides a pedestrian-only, central spine through the neighborhood, and is lined with shops, restaurants and cultural buildings.

The iPlace Design work focused on the southern edge of the district-Aomen Road. For this area iPlace provided a new southern gateway for the district, and a two-block streetscape redesign of Aomen Road to extend a high-level visitor-quality experience from the southern edge of the district to an historic Visitor Center building. In this redesigned street corridor iPlace transformed the character by creating new street-edge terrace spaces for new street edge restaurants and cafes, offering historic building views. The newly refined street section also provided organized, functional areas for bike and scooter parking, as well as locations for new street trees and decorative light fixtures that frame the street. Services included concept design through construction documents. Products also include new paving types, custom street furnishings, digital signs and strategies for traffic management, parking and visitor transit.

27-option 3
